Acadia National Park & Bar HarBOR

Acadia National Park and the city of Bar Harbor are just a thirty minute drive from the cottage. From the cottage, we can see Champlain, Dorr, and Cadillac Mountains on Mount Desert Island where Acadia National park is located. Acadia has over 150 miles of hiking trails, 45 miles of carriage roads (perfect for biking), and some beautiful beaches for swimming and exploring. In and around Acadia, there are many great places for renting kayaks and bikes, taking boat cruises, and going on whale watches. After a long day of hiking, head on over to Bar Harbor for a delicious meal or a decadent ice cream. Fans of shopping will also enjoy the many locally owned stores in downtown Bar Harbor.

Schoodic Peninsula

The rugged coastline at the Schoodic Peninsula is perfect for enjoying a picnic lunch and scrambling over rocks. Kids love exploring the rocky coastline and all of its nooks and crannies. If you have a misty and windy day at the cottage and are up for braving the elements, you won’t be disappointed by the surf that inclement weather brings to this extension of Acadia National Park. Schoodic is also home to a number of fantastic hiking trails.

DOWNEAST MAINE & THE bold coast

Mainers will tell you that the real Maine begins north of Ellsworth. Follow Route 1 up the coast and you will find pristine ocean views, off-the-beaten-path hiking, and, of course, Wild Blueberry Land. Keep going until you make it to the Bold Coast Trail in Cutler, or West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec. You’ll pass through Machias, home of the original Helen’s, and if you’re looking to make a day (or two!) of it, Campobello Island is worth a visit, but remember to pack a passport. Downeast Maine isn’t for everyone, but give it a try and we bet you’ll love it.
